About this experience
Join us as we explore a variety of islands along Biscayne Bay. First kayak your way through wild ecosystems then take a thrilling boat ride to the famous Spandspur Island, commonly referred to as Raccoon Island for the friendly docile raccoons that inhabit it. You will get time to explore the island, swim, and take pictures of the animals that live on this island. We will provide drinks and fresh fruit for you to enjoy along the ride.
Guests are encouraged to wear water appropriate clothing and shoes.
if you are looking for smaller group size, earlier tour is best.

Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
I’d choose this three-hour outing if you want Biscayne Bay to feel active rather than purely scenic: you paddle through a wild setting, continue by boat, then have time ashore on Sandspur—better known here as Raccoon Island. It suits curious first-timers, couples and small celebratory groups who enjoy wildlife as part of an outdoor itinerary. My advice is to come for the combination of mangroves, bay views and island time, not with the expectation that every element or every animal sighting will unfold identically.
Who this experience suits
This is a particularly good fit for visitors who want a manageable introduction to kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding without making the entire excursion about paddling. Equipment and safety gear are included, the activity is described as suitable for all fitness levels, and the boat segment breaks up the physical part of the day.
I think nature-minded travellers will get the most from it. The route includes guided interpretation while travelling to the island, then self-guided time to explore and swim. That balance is appealing if you like some context but do not want every minute tightly choreographed.
Choose the earlier departure if a smaller group matters
I’d choose an earlier tour if conversation with the guide, a calmer group dynamic and more room to settle into the paddle matter to you. The shared tour can accommodate up to 35 people, so the experience may feel more social and less intimate at fuller departures.
If you are travelling with friends, that sociable setup may be a positive rather than a compromise. But for solo travellers and wildlife photographers, the earlier option is the more sensible preference because a smaller group should make the natural pauses and island exploration feel less crowded.
Plan for water, not just the island photos
Wear clothing and shoes that can get wet. I’d favour secure water shoes over footwear you will worry about losing or soaking, since the day combines launching a kayak or SUP, boat travel, beach time and an optional swim. Pack only what you are comfortable managing around water.
The included fruit, light snacks and drinks are a useful convenience, but I would still treat them as a light refreshment rather than the centrepiece of your day. Build in time beforehand to find the correct dock: arrival is requested 30 minutes early, and the meeting directions are specific about not entering the marina office or walking all the way down the marina.
Keep wildlife expectations flexible
Raccoons are the headline, but I’d regard sightings as a possibility rather than a guarantee; wildlife presence can vary by day. The stronger reason to book is that the island visit sits within a broader bay-and-mangrove outing, so the trip still has purpose if animal activity is quieter than hoped.
There is also a meaningful weather trade-off. Poor conditions can affect the planned paddle portion, and one account describes an island stay that felt much more independent when kayaking was cancelled. If the guided kayaking element is your priority, this is worth weighing before you commit; if your priority is simply time on the water and a relaxed island stop, the format is more forgiving.
